What are they protesting?
21. September 2007 by Rob.
I’ve been watching the news about this whole Jena Six thing and have to ask one question: are the people protesting the fact that white kids hung nooses on a tree and didn’t get more than a three day suspension from school or that the six black kids who viciously attacked, beat, and mauled a white kid are being charged with attempted murder?
While I believe that the white kids who hung the nooses deserve to be punished, the problem is that there isn’t a law that was broken. Ok, maybe you can get them on defacing public property. But much as the act was disgusting, they didn’t break any laws. Maybe the protesters could get something passed on hateful, threatening acts.
But the black kids? They actually assaulted another kid because he happens to be white. And the folks who are protesting the charges (note, only one kid has actually been convicted, the rest are awaiting trial) are actually supporting violence against others. Um, folks? Get your asses back home and think about the message that you are sending to the youth of today:
“If someone does something that is not quite illegal but harkens back to a day when violence could be done to you because of your color, then it’s all right to assault someone because they were asking for it.
My view? The three white kids should be forced to work as interns at the local NAACP chapter (or even worse for Al Sharpton for the summer) and the six black kids should spend a week in jail and then work for the summer in n urban hospital emergency room. Oh, and let’s see if Louisiana can pass a law that carries a penalty for implied racial threatening. Wonder what the ACLU’s take is on this.
